I’d say that before I started Kendi Everyday I was a hair color newbie. You can’t do too much with dark hair, really, so it made sense that I had always been the same hair color since birth. But I’ve always been jealous of girls who could change their hair color like chameleons; if you are blonde or a mousy brown you can go blonder or red. If you’re dark, you’re pretty limited.

In fact the furthest I’d ever come to adventure with my locks was letting a friend perm my hair when I was 16. We had a driver’s license, $20 and time to kill if you know what I mean. You know what else died that day besides three hours of our precious youth? My ends. I’d never had frizzy hair until that day when we literally chemically burned the blank out of my hair. I was pretty sure that I would be thankful for whatever nature brought to my hair as long as it would just grow out and my high school reputation would go unharmed. (It did grow out and my high school reputation remained clean. Probably too clean. Live a little, 16 year old Kendi and stop getting perms.)
A few years ago I had a wild hair (ha) to go all Julianne Moore and dye my hair red. It took about three in-salon sessions for the color to actually latch on to my silky strands but I loved the color. For about 2 weeks. And then it faded. Every single day. I could literally watch it fade down my drain in the shower. Every shower was a cruel reminder that I’d spent too much money on a color that would never stick, no matter how little I tried to wash my hair or how few sulfates my shampoo had.

The other downside to my Julianne Moore stage? Roots. Bad roots, I should add. I’d like science to prove this theory that I have: if you dye your hair lighter than your natural color, your hair will grow 10x faster than at the normal rate. I had roots by the time I woke up the next morning. The keep up and the heartbreak of color running down the drain day by day was too much for this girl and I said good bye to my red phase and entered into my ombre stage. This is where I learned that if we just dye the roots, then I can keep some color and have a subtle ombre effect. This I loved.

Until I cut it all off, of course. I had a little bit of ombre left, but wanted more. (You always want back what you cut off, right?) So we bleached and dyed my ends for more ombre effect and I think that’s when I decided I was done with the dying and the upkeep. I just wanted to go back to black…ish brown. I just wanted simple.

After the initial ‘let’s go back dark’ rinse at my salon, I decided to start keeping it up at home. I watched my mom do this for years growing up, so I’m an expert by proxy. In fact, back to my high school days and I’d darken my hair for fall after spending my summer at the pool. Now it’s not lighter ends I’m covering up but lighter beginnings. 50 shades of grey, all up in my roots. This is 30, friends, and it’s not getting any younger.

All that to say, I was asked to give L’Oréal Preference Mousse Absolue a try for touch-ups at home. My hair is short so I can get one application and a touch-up out of the bottle. Or I can get 3 touch-up applications, where I just do the roots which is where I usually only need it. I tend to do this more often than not and leave my ends alone as much as I can. (Those poor guys have been through a lot, as you can see above.) Plus I can stay at home, put my feet up, drink my coffee and tell my husband that for 30 minutes I’m not allowed to move. The instructions from L’Oréal told me I can’t. It’s just me, coffee and 30 minutes. And I’m okay with that.

And that’s my hair-story, so far. I’m sure there will be plenty more colorful chapters in the future (hopefully not perms, though) but for now I’m happy with about as natural as I can get. If it’s easy, it’s for me. Pretty much my motto in life.

My before and after / It’s a pretty subtle change, but I’m into subtle these days.

_______

Which leads me to my next question — beauty posts in the future: interested? I’ve got a few posts in my head but wanted to gauge interest? Hair, makeup, skincare — you into these posts? Because I know a girl that can make them happen 😉

If you’re dark, you’re pretty limited. ” – As a curly redhead, I feel the same way. There’s really nothing to do to my hair! Also, I’d love to see more beauty posts; what makeup products you like, etc. 🙂

  2. love the hair. i dye my hair at home, so this was a great post for me. and YES! do more beauty posts! like how you get your eyeliner to look so freaking good in every picture. geez! 🙂

  3. I’m a natural blonde but at one point I went red and it was my favorite hair color i’ve EVER had, but just like you said, it fades so fast. Way too fast. I haven’t colored my hair in over a year and to my surprise, I actually like my natural color. And what’s easier than that? I would love some hair and beauty posts from you. I always love your makeup!

  4. yes yes yes to all of the above. also i just cut my hair off to about your length and i would love some tips on 1st/2nd/3rd (am i gross for that? lol) day styling short hair! 🙂

  5. I think your hair is super pretty, all the time! And a big fat YES to beauty posts!

  9. Kendi, I feel like you always do the best sponsored posts. They’re so thorough and just as good, if not better, than your “regular” content! Also, hell to the yes for more makeup/beauty posts.

  10. You hair has always been so great. My length is about the same as yours and I’ve been dying to know how you curl it to get that perfect “messy” look. I just can’t seem to figure out what I’m doing wrong, but I end up with curls too big and heavy. I would LOVE to see more beauty posts from you!

    1. Oh you are too kind. Right now with this humidity it’s not been looking so great. I can do a tutorial on messy look — it’s honestly luck mixed with pomade. 😉 The key is to not curl the end of you hair — you wrap it around the curling iron (like a wand, but I just use a regular ol’ con air) and you leave the ends out. I’ll just do a tutorial but hopefully this will help in the mean time!

  11. Yes to more beauty posts! Maybe a bright lipstick tutorial? I loved your bright pink Nars pick from a few posts back!

  12. Would absolutely love to see all kinds of beauty posts from you!! You have such a polished look, that unpolished people like myself need all the advice we can get. 😀 YUSSSSS!!!

  13. Yes to more beauty posts!! I love how you do your makeup and hair, so maybe some tutorials on those?!

    1. It’s crazy right!? Especially if you are just doing one color. I mean, I’ve seen ombre kits so maybe? But one color, easy as pie.

  14. I also have blackish-brown hair, and other than a horrible incident with sun-in in high school, I have remained dye free. I’m now getting a bit of gray as well so this tutorial will definitely come in handy. Oh, and btw– You are my hair idol. Every time I have gone to the salon for the last two years, I have taken several photos of your hair (at varying lengths/styles) with for inspiration. 🙂

  15. I love beauty posts! It’s a great way to mix things up, and you’re just darling so I would love to hear your tips and tricks. 🙂

  16. I always do my hair at home. Love the Feria by Loreal. May have to try out this one too!

  17. Yes, interested. The color at home tip my Mom gave to me has both gotten us compliments from salons throughout the years–gob conditioner on the ends of hair before applying the dye.

  18. I would love to see more beauty posts! I’m a total newbie when it comes to hair color. I’ve only had highlights twice in my 25 years. I really like my natural color but if I ever did at home dying, I think I could handle something like this. Plus L’oreal makes great products…

  19. I’d say beauty posts are welcome! I’m always into hearing what other people are doing.

  20. I am also all for beauty posts. I am also dark haired with grey roots, so I do the same thing so this product may be great since I end up throwing out half a container of dye everytime I touch up my roots!

  21. I find I’m drawn most to bloggers who share more than one facet of their lives. So yes, bring on the beauty posts. I love that you’re able to sport your natural color and it looks great!

  22. Senior year of high school was a pretty rough year for my hair… like every color of the rainbow within 10 months… Luckily I can say that I haven’t died it since October of 2010 and I have my natural hair back, but once I start seeing those greys you better believe I’ll be trying this to keep them at bay!

  23. Love love love this post. I pretty much have the same natural hair color as you, and I completely related to this! One thing I have always noticed with my box dye though is that you really do have to go a shade lighter than you want and then it turns out perfect. A regular boxed “medium brown” always turns out so dark on me! I would love for you to keep up with your beauty posts!!

  51. I saw an ad for that and was thinking about trying it. The plus of 3 touch-ups is that you can easily keep the same color. I’m always buying the wrong shade. I’ll be Lightest Golden Brown and come home with Golden Brown and then my color doesn’t match.

  52. I would love to see more beauty and hair posts! I was just thinking the other day that your skin look so glowy! How do you so it!?

    no words can discribe 😉

you look beautiful and I like your dark hair! its natural and fits perfect…
and yes yes yes to more posts like this:)

  60. I have blackish brown hair too – and every time I get my roots done in the salon (to cover gray, thank you, 30’s), they screw it up using pure black (a big no no!) or too light of a brown so I get RED roots. I’m determined to do it on my own – what shade did you use?

  61. Kendi! That dress… top middle… where is that from?! OBSESSED. Your hair looks beautiful no matter the style – thanks for sharing!

  63. Love reading about your hair story! I’ve always thought your hair is so gorgeous, color and style included! I’m getting ready to make a big hair change (chopping 8-10 inches off) and have to admit, I’m kind of nervous! Also, yes to more beauty posts!

  68. I used this stuff after seeing a post about it in the glitter guide! I have been dying my own hair at home for almost 6 years now, and this is the BEST stuff I have ever used. I love that you can save some for later to touch up your roots. It’s coverage is amazing. I have long thick hair and one bottle covered it so well, no missed spots! I also think they had some of the best instructions I’ve seen…weird, but important!

  70. Kendi, I think I speak for all of us when I say that if you post it, we’ll read it!
Also, I have dark hair too and I feel your pain. That feeling that your precious $$$ is going down the drain with every wash is all to real.

  72. FYI- for anyone with red hair, I recommend using Chi Chromashine in Red. I mix a little in with my conditioner once a week. It’s been a year since I’ve had my hair dyed red, and it’s not as vibrant, of course, but it still has a red tint. My roots also aren’t noticeable because the red helps them blend better.
