1. Rifle through your husband’s/boyfriend’s/roomate’s closet.
2. Find one that you really like, that’s just a few sizes too big for you. Make sure there is a type of natural fiber like wool or cashmere included in the line-up.
3. Offer to do a load of his laundry.
3. Toss into the dryer on high. Shrink the love out of it.
4. When he finds it folded in his closet, he’ll say something like “Remind me not to buy sweaters with wool in them they always shrink. Do you want this one?”
5. Nod your head innocently and take it.
And now you have a new sweater that fits perfectly. See, wasn’t that easy?

I wish. Husband Mike guards his sweaters like a cranky gargoyle.
However, if YOU were nearby, I'd consider conking you on the head so I could steal that skirt!
Hmm, after all my lecturing trying to keep husband's nice sweaters nice, I don't think that would go over well. But he's not that much bigger than me anyways, so I could just borrow them… Something to try!
Ha! I steal my fiance's clothes all the time. He's a thin guy, so I can steal most everything (including pants, which may give me a complex).
Laura
sneaky! i like! and i love that skirt! xoxo jcd
I have to admit, I'm guilty of this as well. "Hey, you don't really wear that anymore, do you?"
Great outfit!
Hey, Reckless Mind.blogspot
I've made a resolution to acquire no more sweaters due to the unnecessary bulk. So I wonder if this will work with button-down shirts somehow!
Well, I must say, the sweater looks fab on you!
Great outfit.
Love,
Hannie – Tea and Biscuits

When my boyfriend wonders why I wear his sweaters (and many other) of his clothes, I always use the reasoning that I'm the one who washes the laundry so I'm allowed to.
I'm not sure it makes full sense, but if hard-pressed for one, I'm sure I could put together a compelling and convincing argument.
Luckily, I'm like Law Mama. I gotta man who's not much bigger than me, so when I'm in the mood for something oversized and slouchy I can always tap into his closet.
Your outfit is painfully adorable, by the way. One of my all time favorites! I just love the pattern and colors of your skirt!
Hehe funny, my guy does the laundry in our house and I am usually the one screaming about my ruined sweaters.
http://jannsboutique.blogspot.com/
Ha! I laughed when I saw the post title, and then husband's in the photo 🙂 Really cute outfit 🙂 x
I saw this skirt in Gap last night! I thought for a second, "Hmm what would I wear with this?" Now I might have to go back and get it. 🙂
I totally tried that skirt on at the Gap but they didn't have the size I needed! I love it. I might have to go to another store to find it. 🙂 I also enjoy your recipe for getting a new sweater.

I wish my husband even wore sweaters! That would be so easy for me!
what a great concept! you always have the best ideas. 😉
the colors here are perfect; you look darling!
xx elanor
i'd never get away with this one, as my boyfriend is so damn skinny that any shrinkage of his sweaters would render them unwearable for me as well. however, i did steal a belt the other day so i can't complain. here's to the menswear trend and loving men with good taste!
If I wasn't married to a complete giant, I would definitely take advantage of his clothes. I love your color palette here!
Never thought of shrinking them before cause I steal from my brother who is skinny, but my dad owns the pretties wool ones! … I'm so stealing one or five! ^^
http://blog.cessoviedo.com
Ha! I have a similar tactic, but my skinny husband is only a couple sizes bigger than me – works for the oversized look. So I just say "hey can I borrow this thanks bye!" and if he protests, I threaten to go shopping. Shuts him up every time 🙂

Love this skirt!! the whole outfit is amazing 🙂 going to shrink my bfs jumpers now! xo
Hahaha you are too funny! I love it. Maybe when I get a husband I will try this… 🙂
Ah, this has happened to me before accidentally. It's a wonderful, wonderful gift :o)
Brilliant! I'm going to be in so much trouble. 🙂
I love this outfit! Love the blues and reds with the cognac colored leather!
I've stolen Nate's sweaters and button ups many, many times. Shrinking them isn't necessary, but good tip none the less. Love that skirt, and it goes great with your sweater!
No Guilt Fashion
Haha, I've "accidentally" done that a few times myself! Guys sweaters are always so much more comfy. Why is that?!
I saw that skirt in Gap before Christmas and spent some time very obviously fondling it and saying "Hmmm this skirt is preeeeetty". Unfortch for me, Husband didn't take the bait. So I think it's only fair that I get a free sweater out of him instead. Mwahahahaha.
cute cute! my boyfriend is over a foot taller than me, so i won't be raiding his sweaters anytime soon, unless the sleeves to the floor look is going to come into style.
Such a cute outfit, love the stealing idea 🙂
Dude. That skirt is too cute. Still at the Gap?
this outfit is gorgeous!!! i love the red, navy and tan combo. love!

I might do this with my husbands J Crew t-shirts. Yes, I have plenty but I like his!
Hahaha! Too cute! Love it! 🙂
My boyfriend is usually supportive of me borrowing clothes, however, we live a state away, so it's never for too long. I love that skirt.
lolol, too funny! I like your way of getting a free sweater!
Love the outfit – so perfect, as always…
Small Time Style
i've been contemplating that skirt… i may have to snap it up now.
thanks kendi!
Ah! If only I could be so lucky – boyfriend isn't quite as busty as I am, so it's tough to find a good fit 🙂 I'm definitely guilty of stealing dress socks and wearing them as knee socks. I'm a huge fan of these over-the-knee socks with tights though – I just wore something similar the other day!
wohoo!! My sweet sweet husband has plenty (too many i'd say) lovely sweaters I've been waiting for him to get tired of so i can wear them, but now I know the trick ;)! thanks so much!! hehe
I just saw that skirt at Gap on super sale! You made it look great!!
step 6. If he continues to balk, have him read my girl Cary's Sweater Manifesto (http://caryrandolph.tumblr.com/post/1169209828/the-manifesto-on-sweaters) and remember that you're really doing him a favor!
you're so clever 😀 My favourite comfy sweater also used to be my BF's – of course I had nothing to do with the shrinking (;
Hmmm, my hubbie wears an XL so that would have to be a lot of shrinkage going on but clever idea!! Love that GAP skirt.
You are an absolute doll. I love this outfit. Thank you for existing.
Kristine. Or Polly.
Husband won't buy sweaters anymore because he thinks I purposely shrink them to steal them… and he's totally right so I completely understand his stand on the issue. Shrinking his Gap argyle sweater was the best thing that happened to my wardrobe.
Well aren't you sneaky? I borrowed my BF's tee just the other day but unfortunately he asked for it back!
LOVE the print dollie…..you look fabulous..love the boots…:)
Hahahaha…..you are so bad! And I love it…and you are cute, stylish, funny…and oh so lovely!!! Loving the outfit today.
Yet another Great Look!!
The boots are adorable and the skirt! I want!!
♥
Pearl
Ingenious idea. Also that skirt comes in black & white as well (not online, but in some stores)
haha great advice 🙂
haha great advice 🙂
I think that after shrinking my boyfriend's sweaters, I would still look like a five year old in them. Glad it works for you, lol! Love that skirt!
Lindsey Soup
you're awesome. my husband shrunk one of my sweaters a couple of years ago. it now fits my 1 year old. oh well. i'll get him back.
awesome! so creative and adorable – absolutely love that skirt!
http://www.ThePantryDrawer.com
That happened to us, except I didn't try to steal it on purpose. But I did steal it after it shrunk and wore it a few times, but then I washed it AGAIN without thinking and it came out doll size. Now we both miss that sweater.
haha good plan but, my BF is all about synthetic fibers. I would have to try really hard to shrink something.
ha too funny. That sweater does fit you oh so well too!
I love that skirt and pretty much everything about this outfit.
You are much more inconspicuous than I am! I just tell him I want it and take it 🙂
I wore a flannel of Brett's last week that I love.
haha too funny! i almost bought that same skirt a week or so ago!
BWAHAHAHA! My older sister shrank my first-ever cashmere sweater, when I was about 10. As you can see, I still haven't forgiven her…
Super cute steal!
That is genius. Now if only I could remember not to do that to my own sweaters. Great look.
I bought that skirt after Christmas! Love it!!
Brilliant!!
Unfortunately there is no dryer that could shrink my giant botfriend's sweater so much that it would fit… too bad! 🙂

How funny, I JUST tried that skirt on at Gap today. It looks way better on you than it did on me.
haha, great tip!! i love it. i love the sweater you picked! it pairs perfectly with the skirt!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH I always steal my BF's stuff and he goes to me, "WHAT AM I GONNA WEAR??" Silly boy. HAHA. I love the red in this skirt so much u little sale getter. u. adorbs.
xo, Kim http://www.eatsleepwear.com
this is such a great outfit and so glad to see you borrowing from the husbs. i'm usually guilty as charged.
love the hair too – looks fab 🙂

Perfect! I just bought this skirt over the holidays and I was having a hard time figuring out what top to pair it with! THANK YOU:) xx

there are two things i am obsessed with:
1. that skirt
2. your hair
http://www.theairconditionedgypsy.com
Awesome! Love this outfit and the close up photo of you. BTW we passed the Skeen building at NMSU. Is it named after you?
The timing of this post is perfect! My husband got a sweater for Christmas and I love it but I don't think he'll wear it. I don't think I need to shrink it, but I've been looking for warmer clothes to wear in my freezing classroom at work. His new sweater is just what I need! Thanks!
Muah ha ha! Evil grin! Your skirt is lovely!
Bahahaha, I love your logic! That's amazing. Also amazing? This skirt! Love it! You look so pretty!
Ha ha ha! I'm gonna go shrink one of Bob's sweaters right now!
I wish my boyfriend's sweaters would fit me!
What an ingenious idea! Here comes the evil laugh – MUHEHEHE! 😀
Kendi, this is why I love you.
🙂
Naughty girl! Love the skirt.
ha, that's awesome! and love love love the whole outfit!! i need some boots like that!
Hilarious! I steal my husband's long t's and belt them into mini dresses! 🙂
Haha I discovered this trick this winter, except I don't have to sneakily shrink mine. My boyfriend is tiny and only a little bigger than me. And I like my sweaters a bit oversized anyway. But they have all been gradually moving over to my side of the closet. In fact, I'm wearing one of his right now!
You look adorable, btw. I love that skirt 🙂

haha, you win for best-way-to-get-a-free-sweater.
also, i totally almost died over that skirt when i saw it at the gap but I didn't have the money to buy it, but it's amazing.
ape-z.blogspot.com
hahahahah hilarious!!
I agree with Sal. I've been debating that skirt! Dang it Kendi, I feel like I need.
a+ for step one. boyfriend's closet is so helpful if you have a trusty pair of leggings or skinnies handy.
ps, amandamantes.blogspot.com !
dearest kendi,
i love the sweater idea. but can we talk about your header ADD? i have to confess, my favorite of your headers was a couple headers ago, but now i can't even remember what it looked like. i liked yesterday's header, too. this one? maybe notsomuch, but that's nunna my business and actually, i will maybe not even post this comment because i HATE when people leave negative comments. it's so rude and i always think, "don't they have anything better to do???" i suppose it's because blogs make everyone think that we're all best friends, so we need to be honest with each other. but sometimes we just need to be nice to each other. and lie. forget honesty. but, this time i thought i'd say: we come for your writing and your clothes (both of which we LOVE), not for your header. so don't stress about it.
xo,
b.a.
That's why my husband won't let me near his laundry.
gah! i just re-read my comment and it sounds so rude! i'm the worst! how do people live with themselves when they leave mean comments? i promise i did not intend it to be mean.
apparently i just can't deal with change. change that baby all you want and i swear i'll never leave even a remotely negative comment again.
Great idea but I think my bf would kill me. LOL. I like your hair parted this way.

My husband has been hiding his Pringle sweater just because of that reason..lol I really like the print on that skirt. Going to gap.com right now!
one of my friends did that on accident and he gave it to me. score, free sweater! Of course I offered to do his laundry after he bought a new one.
Just Better Together
Brilliant idea!

Just discovered your blog a few days ago and I had to comment today – HILARIOUS TITLE! And on a random note: I totally ordered those exact boots a few days ago and I'm anxiously awaiting their arrival! I stalked a girl at the mall who was wearing them and demanded that she tell me about them. 🙂
Ok can your husband teach my bf how to take pictures like yours? They are just so amazing and clear! What camera do you guys have?
Now the outfit: amazing!
I'll have to give your 'how-to' a shot!
Hahaha I love it! Although my husband mostly wears stiff collared dress shirts and ties. I'm guessing these rules don't apply on other menswear.
Now that's a great idea. I'm off to raid my husband's sweater drawer!
Great idea. I think I have some laundry to do now.
My Heart Blogged
I covet your skirt!
I like the sneaky way that you went about this. But I don't think that the outfit is your best. I would rather see a top that contrasted the skirt. It flares out so to balance that you need some thing tighter on top… Just my opinion…
HAHA that is hilarious!
but i really do love every single bit of this outfit, girl. you look lovely as always!! that skirt is so perfect. 🙂
Oh, I bought that skirt one day when every thing was 40% off, including sale items, so it was like $11 or something crazy like that. It's sooo comfortable I got it in the other color combo (black with white squares) too. I like to wear it with a tucked in, solid color fitted tee though, short or long sleeve.
I LOVE your boots. LOVE. Do you have any tricks for getting a free pair of those that doesn't involve a husband or a dryer?
steal some flannel and make a cute outfit out of that. i keep trying on the hub's flannel shirts but feel to hipster and wimp out. 😉
dang it. totally saw that skirt at gap the other week. i knew i should have snagged it up. super cute.
this is the thing- every time i see something that catches my eye in a store, i'm like, no, that won't look good on me. and then you wear it and i'm like, crap- it does look good. why didn't i buy that?!
today- your skirt. 🙂
thanks for keeping me inspired!
Very cute! I saw that skirt at Gap (on sale too), but couldn't figure out what to do with it. Now more ideas are flowing. Thanks!!
Note to self aka laundrymaid of the house: buy fashionable sweaters for hubby.
Just found your blog and I have to say all your outfits are great! Going to follow you!
Your post never fails to crack me up!
Lovee the whole outfit!

hahaha….i have TOTALLY done the same thing! it happens 😉
This outfit has convinced me to buy this skirt — I've been eyeing it for so darn long! I love the way you put it together, too. Might have to steal that, and a sweater from the boyfriend.

What if your husband is a giant? Guess I could make a sweater dress! 😉
Ha, this really made me laugh..cute!
Love the boots and your hair! I wish I could "borrow" my husband's clothes but he's about 8 inches taller than me and much more muscular, so that's out of the question.
Meow & Mwah
hahahaha great method, love it! You look adorable. I love the skirt, and you have a gorgeous smile.
Love the look and your hair looks extra beautiful 🙂
I love the way you are wearing this skirt! I have it too 🙂 You look great!

I love the outfit. I think the over the knee socks are great, I have loads but never seem to look good. I will try harder!
http://twinmummyoutfits.blogspot.com/
I love to "shop" my mom's and sister's closets. Mom has so much great "old" stuff that she doesn't want anymore or is at least willing to temporarily part with. And now, sister is off to study abroad with limited suitcases so I can to "shop" the leftovers!
your hair looks gorgeous in this post! did you do anything different?
LOVE this outfit SO much. But they're out of the skirt in my size. Bummer. Looks great!
I have been hawking this skirt forever, but could NOT, for the life of me, figure out what I'd wear with it. But, I love what you've done!
Gracey
I love that skirt you're wearing. ell actually I love everything about this outfit. So carefree & light but still so chic & stylish.
Hahaha I love that plan–I'll be trying that with one of my hubby's sweaters soon!
