9.19.10fI met my husband while we were at school. He was not who I was looking for. I was looking for a tall, dark and handsome guy who wanted to go to law school alongside me. Or rather, I wasn’t looking for anyone at all.
My hair was short, his hair was long. I was polished, he was a hippie. He was all sorts of wrong, I tell you but he had the cutest smile. I couldn’t get him out of my head. So we dated and fell in love. And then I graduated, got a job in the city and waited for him to propose.
And waited.
And waited.
Every time we went to dinner, I thought that he was going to pop the question. He’d reach for his wallet and I’d prepare myself for him to pull out a ring. Until one day he did, in my apartment parking lot, where I least expected it.
We said our vows three short months later in front of our family and friends. We laughed, we cried, we said I do. Now three short years later, I wake up every morning and still say I do to the boy with the cutest smile.
A few people have asked about my necklace, as I wear it often. I wore it straight for our first year of marriage, never taking it off. We bought it on our honeymoon, during a time that we didn’t have much money. Originally the “B” was for my husband’s name and now almost three years since we bought that necklace, it has come to have a different meaning. I look at that initial as how I now look at our life we’ve built together. We used to move separately, waiting on the other one to catch up. But now we move together. What once meant one, now means both.

  2. Such a beautiful post.

And I just had to say that I have the same grey moccasins…but my puppy destroyed them before they even made it onto my blog. Sadness. Love your look here—casual perfection!

  3. This is presh. For a second there, I thought you were gonna say B was for BABY!! haha … now THAT will be something to look forward too. Fashionista meets pregnancy. Anyways…love this post and this look. You are adorable, as always

  4. such a sweet way of telling your story. sounds like your husband is as good as mine…who is currently making over my closet alone because he doesn't want me to breath in the paint fumes.
also, you look really beautiful in these photos! aaaand, you've inspired me to cut off a pair of jeans…

  5. What an inspiring post! As someone who is far too young to be so jaded and on the verge of giving up on love, this is a wonderful reminder that fairytales do come true and love is out there. I wish you and your husband the best of luck for many more years to come : ) And on a lighter note- I love the dual meaning of your necklace! So pretty!

  6. Ironic post.
I was going to your blog to leave a comment on your most recent post. I was going to say how you should write about your wedding and include some old shots. Also thinking you should post 1 picture from each of the past 5 years to show the evolution of styles.
I get to the page and you wrote about your husband, dating him, being engaged, and getting married.

  7. That is such a cute story. I like what the B stands for. You look great in the pictures by the way….really happy.

  8. thanks for that, Kendi! i'm a sucker for love stories… in fact, i'm in one now. we are engaged to be married in february and are definitely feeling similar to what you included in your post about how you and your man used to be separates but have since grown together. We come to situations with our own viewpoints… and It's not easy to sacrifice our own views in order to mold together… thanks for the encouraging reminder that this morphing process is all worth it:)

  9. This story about you and your husband is very sweet. I really enjoy your sarcastic sense of humor in your regular posts but it's nice to see you write something like this too.

  10. aww, kendi, this was beautiful! what a sweet story and i love that you have a little symbol to remind you of everything you have together.

  11. How cute! Love that you shared your story with us! I hope someday my husband and I will "move together" instead of waiting for each other.

  12. This by far is my favorite posts of yours Kendi. I love hearing about how couples get together, but what I love even more is when couples STAY together.

    xx Love & Aloha

  13. Such a sweet post – Congrats to you (B)oth. I know, I should say, Congrats to you two. But how else was I supposed to get the famous "B" in there? ;D

  14. Wow, I just teared up a bit! That was a beautiful story πŸ™‚ It's good to hear about love these days!

And cute outfit, as usual… somewhere, someone (me) is copying your outfits every so often. Keep up the good work.

  15. I love the hear love stories like yours πŸ™‚

You make casual look so comfortable and beautiful!

  16. I totally agree with you and your feelings. Two years of marriage and I feel the same. The only difference being I was the long haired hippie and my husband was the polished one. Now I am a polished hippie. I shine and I glow. And I have long hair.

  17. girl i know exactly how you felt about the waiting bc its what im doing right now lol. every time he even suggests we go somewhere i make sure to get extra pretty and sometimes dressed up..you know, just in case. and then finding out hes wearing his bleach stained, holey cargo shorts and a t.

he made the mistake last year of telling me in november he was going to propose by my birthday, in may. i know it better happen soon but the anticipation is killing me.

  18. That was the sweetest thing I have heard in a long time- I even teared up a little…thanks for the inspiration in fashion and in life.

  19. Just when I think your last post was great, you go and top yourself. Love this!

And once again I have to say, your skin/makeup look FLAWLESS! Please, please, pretty please with a cherry on top consider doing a post on your makeup routine. I have similar coloring and would love to know what products you routinely use (particularly in this post in which you're glowing, but then again, perhaps that can be attributed to the topic at hand). πŸ™‚

    Thanks!

  24. I think I've commented once before, and whichever post it was, I said it was my favorite one of yours ever.

    I stand corrected.

Seriously, you had me nearly in tears this morning (as I decide whether or not to continue my graduate education with a husband and full-time job in tow). What a beautiful, sincere post about what love looks like in real life.

Oh, and the outfit? Just the cherry on top. I'd been thinking about that Anthro top, and now I think I may just take the plunge. Any way we could get some details on those moccasins?

  25. Loved this post : )

And my boyfriend is from Minnetonka! I looooove the moccasins. Your blog is great – definitely one of my favorites.

  36. I could not have read this post at a better time! My husband and I had a car accident Sunday and the car was totaled. I have not let him out of my sight because I feel so mush closer to him now that I know I could have lost him. Always cherish what you have because you never know when it can be taken away:(

  37. and does that mean "B"aby?!?! maybe I'm reading too far between the lines..LOL!

    That's beautiful either way!!!

still loving the fact that I stumbled across your blog two months ago πŸ™‚

  38. Kendi,
Thank you for not just sharing your great style and humor with us but real life. The stuff that sorta sucks but also makes us human – in a very good sense.
As someone looking in (not in a creeper way or anything) it's nice to know that even "happy perfect marriages" we read about on the internet still have ups and downs. Like burnt pizza and confusion about life plans and… I love and admire your candor.
And though you hardly need some stranger rooting you and your husband on in your mawiage – here I am saying "Go You Two!!!" like the idiot applauding her friends at a bowling alley -hopefully it will still be seen as a positive even if it is ridiculous.

Love the necklace. Love the story. Love that you shared it here.

  39. This is one of the sweetest posts I have ever read. I almost cried when I read it.Β

  40. Was this an anniversary post? Β If so… September 19th was my anniversary too – this fall (2012) we'll be married three years! Β Denny was not what I was initially looking for either, but he has wonderful eyes and is the best friend I've ever had.

  41. Hi Kendi, I've been following your blog for a few months now and I have to say you're my fashion idol. I was sent here from the Aug 21st post… and I have to say this post brought a huge smile and an instant tear to my eye! hisThis post is just soo sweet and you and your husband make an incredibly cute couple! I wish you two many many more years of happiness! πŸ™‚
