It’s been a while since I did a fancy-ish dress, hasn’t it? Honestly, I haven’t been too dressy since having Gemma, I don’t know if that’s just my style in general or perhaps just the norm for 1st year postpartum. But I will say it felt darn good to put this dress on even just for our normal family brunch on Sunday. This dress is from the Gal Meets Glam collection at Nordstrom. I really loved that this dress is a thicker knit, so it kind of meets me in the middle of how I used to get all dressy and fancy and where I am now, more on the everyday casual side. It’s super flattering as well and very brunch with a one year friendly. Those breakfast smudges came right out – ha! Just being real, because Lord knows I am a champion these days at stain removal!

You know what we should talk about today? How life changing alterations can be for your wardrobe. And no, I’m not just talking about new things or things you’ve not bought yet, but things that you already own. It’s honestly never too late to alter a piece in your closet! There is absolutely no timeline for alterations. In fact, it’s almost better to get an idea of how you wear something and what you want to be changed about a garment before taking it to the tailor. Giving a tailor exactly what you’d like to change is such a smart game plan.

As someone who has been in retail for a long time and who has probably tried on thousands upon thousands of pieces of clothing, I can tell you one thing in my most expert opinion: it’s all a guessing game. For you, for clothing designers, for everyone. Now I’m not saying that the clothing industry doesn’t do a VERY good job of guessing the middle, but since we all come in a variety of shapes and sizes it can be quite tough to expect one thing (such as this pretty dress!) to fit everyone’s unique shape just perfectly. And this is where alterations come in. I think sometimes we just think about denim inseams being altered, but this dress, for instance, could be altered to be shorter if you need it to be, or perhaps the bust or shoulders need to be taken up, etc. Tailoring helps your wardrobe fit your body perfectly. Tailor-made for you.

Of course, we would all love to be able to afford a bespoke wardrobe that is hand-tailored to us, but that is royalty level expensive. And while I truly believe deep in my heart that Kate Middleton AND Meghan Markle read this blog daily, their company excluded in this following statement: we aren’t all royalty and we don’t all have the budget for a tailored-to-you wardrobe. Am I right?

Nope. I’m wrong and so are you! I want you to read what I am about to write out loud: Nordstrom is now offering free alterations on anything in your closet for reward members! There is a lot to unpack there so let’s break it down:

FREE ALTERATIONS ON ANYTHING.

That means that blazer in your closet that the sleeves are just a touch too long, or perhaps your pair of denim that you just LOVE but the inseam just isn’t right. Nordstrom’s alterations can do this for you. You can alter any item in your closet, it doesn’t even have to be from Nordstrom! And it’s so easy, you make an appointment directly on the site, take your item to the closest store and alterations are quick and easy. This is just ONE of the many services that Nordstrom offers if you are a part of their Loyalty and Rewards Program, now appropriately called the Nordy Club. Once you join, you’re signed up for all of their free services OR if you have a rewards account with them or Nordstrom credit card, then guess what? You’re already in the club! All basic alterations are free for Nordy Club members. Amazing.

You can learn more about the Rewards Program here and more about Tailoring here.

PS: I linked a few other dresses from the Gal Meets Glam collection above! And I linked a few more black boots like the ones I am wearing below!

Fit Details

The dress fits true to size. I am in the 8 and it fits well! If you have a smaller chest/shoulders, I would suggest sizing down one.

Monthly Capsule Wardrobe

Each month I create monthly capsules out of my favorite pieces, perfectly curated for each month.

  1. Going from glam to casual-ish is the norm after a baby. It’s all about ease and comfort.

Love the dress, it is perfection on you
    xx

  2. FYI I stopped in store to take advantage of this and was told it isn’t true/accurate. 🙁

    1. What?! That’s no good! From everything I’ve read, it should be for rewards members!!?? I’d be sending an email to customer service.

        1. I’m sending all of this feedback to Nordstrom! Thanks for telling me!

      1. No clue. I showed the manager your blog post and he honored it for me as a one-time courtesy (so that’s amazing if nothing else- I had 4 dresses altered, none of which were originally from Nordstrom) but he said he was unaware of that change and that he double checked with corporate and they didn’t say anything about free alterations for non-Nordstrom purchases.

        1. Unreal!! It’s all over their website! I’m so honored that you showed him the post! BAH! 🙂 I feel like I had a part in your alterations haha

  3. I’ve been a long time Nordstrom customer and earlier this month took my first item to them for alterations. It wasn’t bought there but since I was returning some boots, I thought I’d see if they could help with it. The trailer seemed very knowledgeable and had 33 years experience and I left feeling confident that he’d have to problem tapering the arms and bring the the sleeves up about an inch. Two weeks have gone buy and I was supposed to be able to pick it up last week but they still haven’t called to say it’s ready. I called them to ask how it’s coming along and they informed me that they cannot current locate the coat. So, I’m a little upset since there’s nothing I can do since it wasn’t purchased from Nordstrom and I signed a waiver that if anything were to happen they weren’t responsible to replace the item. I don’t know how it could have been misplaced but I’m certain that I’ve been suckered out of $2,000 via that beautiful Comme des Garcons coat. Maybe I shouldn’t have left the tags on it. Is there anything I can do about this?

  4. Just FYI – this post is not accurate. Nordstrom only provides free basic alterations on Nordstrom purchases. Although they will alter non-Nordstrom purchases, it is not free. My wife took in 5 items today. It cost $110. We spoke with the tailor and customer service. I realize this post is 3 years old, but if you still actively update this website, it would be nice to remove this or update it. Thanks.
