So as I was putting this post together I found myself procrastinating because I’ve never done a travel post before. It’s a little nerve-racking to go off the beaten path with posts, especially with travel since it’s not really something we do much. (Although I wouldn’t hate it if it was something we did a lot of.)
Before this trip, I’d never been outside of the continental U.S. before (although I dipped a toe in the Gulf of Mexico once. Pretty sure that doesn’t count, but still.) Most everyone I know either studied abroad or vacationed abroad before and told me of their amazing trips and experiences. I was full of other people’s stories but not my own. Europe had very high expectations in my brain, a very close second to Disney World. For that reason alone, I’m very glad we ended up in Spain first. Let me put this out there: I would live in Barcelona if they would let me. The weather is beautiful, the people are so kind and very forgiving of broken Spanish and everything feels so full of life. I feel like Spain gets it. They do life right. For instance, mid-day siestas are a very real and very good thing. Shops would close down at 2 or 3 and wouldn’t open back up until evening. At first, as a tourist, this was annoying if you didn’t make it to a business on time before the siesta. But we quickly learned to give in and just take a break or better yet, a nap. It was nice to be forced to slow down.
We landed in Barcelona first. B and I went with a few of our friends and rented a house via Air BnB. (100% recommend if you haven’t used this service before. They have an app, it’s easy to use and for the most part cheaper than hotels. Plus you get to stay in areas that you typically wouldn’t get to see if you just went the tourist route.) We stayed in the city center, the ‘les Tres Torres’ neighborhood. We had a balcony, a little market nearby and of course a bar/coffee shop. AKA heaven. 16 hours of travel calls for a nice balcony and a cheap bottle of wine.
We spent most of our days walking around, getting lost. We would start on ‘las rambles’ — a street filled with vendors and shops — and we would just start walking from there. We tried to hit up most things in our proudly touristy book, but ended up just getting distracted by sangria and tapas. On Sunday we somehow stumbled upon this beautiful market on our way to the Cathedral and Picasso Museum. (Which was free on Sunday when we were there but either way get there early because the line literally runs down the streets it’s so long. Or buy tickets ahead of time and skip the line completely.) Everywhere you turn there is another patio waiting for you to join. It’s hard to not give in. We also ended up buying an oil painting from the sweetest man and stumbled upon a few street performers.
Do you see what I mean by the liveliest city ever? Even the buildings have life to them. I’m in love with this city. You can literally walk for days in this city and never be bored.
We spent a lot of time down by the Marina Port Vell. Basically once you start walking in Barcelona you can find something beautiful in any direction and we used the Marina as our compass point. Plus it’s pretty and we ended up on a sunset booze cruise on the Mediterrean one night, so again there are worst places to be. We also found ourselves at a place that sat right off the pier that served cheap tapas and the best Sangria 19 euros could buy because we got lost on our way to somewhere. But it turned out to be one of the best afternoon’s I’ve had in a long time. There was also a really nice park nearby that you could sit and people watch for hours. Just a friendly tip: eat a waffle with chocolate on it when you are around street vendors. You can thank me later.
(my sweet friend and travel partner, ramie)
One day B and I went off on our own adventure without the group. Guess what we found? Gelato. It was delicious. I can’t remember the name of the place we went because I was more focused on getting the gelato into my face, but I’m pretty sure you could go anywhere for Gelato and it’s good. I’d be willing to bet a lot of money on that. We had a good mix of local cuisine and restaurants we stumbled upon through yelp or our guide. A few places of note: Bobby Gin’s, Macchina Pasta Bar and Tapa Tapa at the Pier (I know it’s touristy but we loved it!).
(my handsome tour guide)
I should tell you up front that I was not a fashion forward traveler this trip. Honestly, I had no idea what to pack so I over packed. (It’s what I do.) I want a do-over because now I know exactly what to do. So all that to say we didn’t grab many ‘outfit’ photos throughout the trip. (I’ll explain more when i talk about Paris / Switzerland.) I also went for comfort over high fashion. And I highly recommend this choice.
When we were meandering through the streets, we stumbled upon the cutest boutique called Passage. The sweetest lady was in there and we started talking and she was 29 and they had just opened the shop / art gallery. We ended up talking shop for a solid 30 minutes and I knew that I couldn’t leave without buying something from her. So we settled on a few paper goods and as we settled up, I noticed a few gold bangles. When I looked further words were imprinted on them, of course it was in what I thought at the time was spanish but ended up being french. Either way I didn’t know what the meaning of the sayings were so I just picked one. The one I fancied the most had ‘s’epanoir’ pressed into it. I didn’t know the translation but I was set on that one for some reason. I asked my new shop friend the meaning and in her best english she said “like…emotions… explosion of emotions, I guess? I’m not sure the word it is for you.” Explosion of emotions was good enough for me and we bought the bracelet.
As we were sitting out enjoying wine that afternoon, I started googling the translation of the word. It turns out it means to blossom, to bloom. I thought her translation of ‘explosion of emotions’ was pretty true to that. It’s funny because I traveled halfway around the world just to be reminded to bloom. You can’t run away from your truth, no matter how far you go.

How serendipitous! I love that you found a bloom bracelet in Spain.
The story about the bracelet’s meaning gave me chills! I’m so glad you had a fantastic experience in Barcelona. The only time I visited, I got a stomach bug and then it rained the rest of the time…so it obviously wasn’t the best. Your beautiful pictures make me want to give Barcelona another chance!

Holy cow, that’s probably the most awesome thing ever about the bracelet. What a God moment! I just traveled to Peru and I’ll tell you, I was not the most stylish person on the trip. It’s soooo hard to pack! I would have packed totally different, bringing more of one things and way less of another. I brought like 3 pairs of jeans thinking it was going to be cooler, well it turns out it was like 95-100 most of the days. No pants for this girl. I was missing my Florida weather and shorts so much!

You should travel more often, and give travel blogging a go. This entry was amazing! <3 Keep blooming, Kendi!

Hi Kendi! I’m French and I’ve been reading your blog for months now. “S’épanouir” means “to blossom” for a person. To become happier, etc. What a beautiful word because this is probably the feeling this place gave you. I’m going to Barcelone in a few days and I cannot wait. (:

Btw Kendi, you misspelled Las Ramblas! Just pointing it out like an annoying reader. Except I’m not an annoying reader. Just a native Spanish speaker who thought I should let you know. 🙂

Oh, and your outfits look perfect. Casual, comfy, and travel-like, yet still very cute and classically Kendi. <3
awesome story. and your outfit is fabulous – I’m sure you not only fit in with all those famously stylish europeans but were more comfortable!

Hola!
First of all, I would like to say that I love your blog and I am happy to hear you enjoyed Barcelona so much. I am originally from Barcelona but living in Belgium now. I wanted to make a little remark about your comments. We do not take siestas, in the city center you barely find a shop that closes at midday… In the towns they still close during the midday cause they are open until late in the evening, as you also said, so people need a break. After that, I hope i didn´t sound nasty, it was really not my intention, hope you enjoy your Europe trip! XO
