There comes a point in the summer when I have to take a good long look at myself in the selfie mirror and say “babe, you’ve bought enough denim shorts, you must stop.” This summer it happened surprisingly early and since I am trying to not be so much of a lush, I am going to take my own advice and stop looking for denim shorts. This is my downfall; I am very very very good at finding things to buy (which is good because that’s my job!) and they’re 9 times out of 10 amazing finds. However, when I really put my mind to something I can’t let something go, it becomes an obsession. In this case, I have been on the hunt for a light pair of denim shorts which I have now found 3 GREAT pairs which is probably 1 too many, depending on who I’m asking. Is this lush territory? Maybe but in my defense they are all very different. So I am going to say not lush but definitely getting close. I will now be concluding my light denim shorts search and find, as I have found the ones.

This pair of denim shorts from Free People kept haunting me in my Nordstrom cart, so I took a chance on them. Free returns make me very bold in my assumptions. I honestly had zero expectations for this pair, especially in the fit department. Free People is so hit or miss when it comes to fit — like I am legitimately always surprised. With Free People, it is either way too big or it’s so small I have to take a small mental health break for a few minutes. Pep talk myself back to reality. But this pair fit me right out of the box, no pep talks needed. I think it helps that they are high waisted and they have an elastic band in the back, which I’ve found to be true for a lot of pants / shorts this summer. No complaints here, as I will happily wear a pair of pants hidden elastic band, in fact you don’t even have to hide it. Elastic pants were on my vision board for 2024, so look at me, manifesting. I am in the size large of the shorts and they fit me spot on. (I’m typically a 30 in shorts at Madewell, if that helps!) Plus they’re under $100, and they’re a nice thicker denim with a hint of stretch. The sides go up a bit but the back and front cover, so that’s nice.

If you like the look, find them in a multitude of colors from Free People here!

OR if you find them from Nordstrom here!

You know what? This outfit features two of my other favorite things — this Zara top I want to clone into a million different colors because it’s so soft and perfect. AND my trusty Clare V. Crossbody that I’m wanting in a new color for this summer. Any suggestions??

Fit Details

I am in the large of the top and of the shorts. Both fit me (8/10) true to size. The top fits a bit more generously, but is more cropped. I would say if you need length, go up a size.
