While I am no stranger to pink, I am a bit of a newbie to purple. It’s just not a shade I’m automatically drawn to when it comes to pieces to wear. But when I invested in this sweater at Nordstrom a few weeks ago, I committed to figuring out this shade of purple. So I got to thinking what’s the deal with me and purple? And I know what it is now — it’s actually kind of a challenge to pair with other colors in my closet. Especially when I’m drawn to either bright pops of color (red!) or dark neutrals like grey and black. When I first paired this with navy, I loved it. The deep complementary colors just worked together you know? But so easily I can be one note and go back to what I know works and not reaching out of the box. I decided to switch it up, surprise myself and go to the other side of the color wheel and try some pinks. I think the mix works really well and without feeling too juvenile. Not that I’m worried about looking younger. Feel free to mistake me for a mid twenty-something.
In fact the other day in the shop I was distracting four little girls while their moms shopped. As an introduction, we were telling each other what school grades we were in. Inevitably the little cuties asked me my age — and if you are feeling rather brave, which that day I was, you ask a child their opinion. This is how the exchange went down: “How old do you think I am?” “I don’t know… 22??” God bless young eyes. I basked in that moment of mistaken youth for a second and then I ended up telling them my real age (30) and for a solid 20 seconds of silence they stared at me with no response, eyes blinking wondering why I didn’t look a little bit closer to death if I was so old. (Then one of the little girls finally blurted out ‘you’re like 100!’) I give myself the same look in the mirror every morning, girls. All that to say I’m thinking my new girlfriends would appreciate this outfit.

  1. I am a HUGE fan. You are my favorite blogger. That being said, I am struggling with the pieces you are wearing. Not the beauty of them (because they are gorgeous!) but the price! Your clothes are so expensive. I find myself wondering how you can open your own business (I own mine as well) and still have money to pay for $200 sweaters… Maybe I am just cheap! But, because I am in the same business and am roughly the same age, is it your blog that generates the extra income? Because owning my own business is financially a struggle and buying new sweaters that cost that much is NOT an option… Could you speak on this? I don't think I'm the only one who has seen a major shift in the cost of items in your closet over time. I wish there were more items that I found accessible. Although, I do find everything you wear VERY inspiring. I purchased the entire outfit you wore the other day (Fair Isle sweater and jeans from Old Navy). xoxo

  2. I agree with Natalie – I've noticed a huge difference in how accessible your new clothes are. There's often a mix of high-street and high-end, and I appreciate that, but lately I have found myself disappointed that the perfect purple sweater is so out of my price range. I often shop at J. Crew and Madewell for pieces that are special but also affordable (and will last longer than Target and Old Navy) but beginning with that white peplum blouse this summer, I can no longer shop your outfits, or jeans/coats etc. That being said, you always look great and I find inspiration from your ensembles, just as Natalie said.

  3. Thanks for the sweet words and your thoughts. I'm glad you find my outfits inspiring, I hope that's what most people can get from my blog — inspiration to maybe wear a color they are shy about or try a style / trend they haven't before or just to find inspiration to figure out how to wear styles in their closet different ways. Thanks for saying you walk away most days inspired — that means a lot!

When I started my blog, I was basically on a journey to figure out my style but 5 years later and at the age of 30 I feel like every year tells a different story of my style. I definitely have found different pieces to invest in this year, like this sweater in today's post and I'll continue to buy pieces that I love at different price points. (For instance, I purchased a sweater from Target a few posts back, completely different price point than this one obviously, but still something I loved and wanted to feature here.) This post is sponsored (as mentioned above) so I trekked into a different brand for me and ended up really liking the quality of the brand and sweater, but knowing that this sweater or brand might be for some but not for everyone. I feel like that with my blog in general, it might not be for everyone but it is for someone. I hope that the pieces that you can invest in, you do, if you want to. But if you can't, I hope you can still find something in my post that drives you to try something new like a color combination or whatever it is that inspires you that day. Or maybe nothing at all from my outfit and you just give yourself a good desk chuckle at work from whatever I wrote and you move on with your day.

I don't want you to feel alienated by these pieces, though, if that's what you feel. Never my intention and maybe next year ( I say next year because I might be zapped with posts soon. Year end dead head here.) I can be sure to link a similar item if the item feels more of an investment than some readers would like to make. As always, I want style to feel attainable never alienated, so I'll try to keep this in mind moving forward. But please know that if I invest in something like a $200 sweater and then put it here on the blog I'm basically saying yes, this is a good piece to invest in if you're interested.

Thanks for your thoughts, let me know if you have any more. Hope you're wrapping up your 2014 nicely this year at your shop!

  4. Thank you for your thoughts, too! I responded to Natalie below, if interested 🙂 I appreciate your thoughts and will keep this in mind moving forward.

  5. Thank you SO much for your thoughtful response. I would absolutely love to see alternatives if maybe a $200 sweater means I'd be eating ramen noodles for a month. 😉 I really appreciate the way you respond with your readers and your genuine understanding when someone brings up an idea or has a question. Many thanks for your response and all the best in the new year! And of course a very Merry Christmas! 🙂 xoxo

  6. No one wants ramen for a month in exchange for a sweater, that's for sure. Although, maybe ramen once a week is fine, right? I've got a really refined palate. 😉 Absolutely I'm going to respond to you! And thanks for being so nice, too. I will definitely start linking other options moving forward. I think that's a great suggestion I hadn't thought of before, so thanks for helping me get there today. Merry Christmas, girl!

  7. What an absolutely stunning coat! I just love the shade of pink, and I'm so impressed by how well it works with your purple sweater – I never would have thought of that colour combination but it's really perfect. Fabulous – as always 🙂

  8. I love the colour combination! It's funny, I was thinking reading your post that purple would be easy to wear….but don't own that many purple pieces at all! I'll try wearing the little I do have with pink next time! 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

  10. So, I have been reading your blog for a little while but never commented before- until I saw your dilemma with purple. Poor misunderstood purple. It's one of my favorite colors and I love how in this outfit it makes your blush coat look more lilac! I think the color looks amazing with your skin and while one of my favorite combinations is purple and gray, it does go swimmingly with jeans and any other neutral you can think of, and a purple sweater with some red lipstick is a knockout.

Wishing you a happy stylish holiday and all the best in the new year!

  11. Beth Dutton’s fashion sense is goals, especially when it comes to that stunning black purse she carries on Yellowstone. It’s the perfect blend of chic and badass. I definitely need to upgrade my purse game to match hers.
